EYE EXAMS Bio of Dr Benjamin Gates Dr. Benjamin Gates is a lifelong resident of the Richmond area. Ben grew up in Chesterfield County where he attended Monacan High. After graduating from Monacan, he continued his studies at Hampden-Sydney College, near Farmville, Virginia, where he graduated cum laude, majoring in history and economics. Once he had graduated from Hampden-Sydney, Ben attended Virginia Commonwealth University in pursuit of a masters’ degree in history. After finishing at VCU, Ben moved to Northern Virginia. There, when going to his annual contact lens exam, Ben first became inspired to become an optometrist. He researched his options and realized that with only a few more classes, he could get into optometry school. He moved back to Richmond and enrolled as a part time student at VCU. The next year, Ben was accepted into optometry school and attended Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He graduated in 2010 and moved back to Richmond, where he has been living and working ever since. Dr. Gates and his wife Lindsey live in Richmond’s Fan District.
Dr Gates :
“Optometrists frequently have discussions with eyeglass-wearing patients in regard to the option of trying out contact lenses. Patients are often hesitant about trying contact lenses for the first time or have been told in the past that they were not the ideal candidate for contact lenses. Certainly, contacts are not the best option for everyone, but many people who have been told in the past that glasses were their only option are, in fact, potentially missing out on a safe and convenient vision-correcting alternative to eyeglasses. Patients often say that they can’t wear contacts because of their astigmatism. Other patients have assumed or have been told by another doctor that they would not make good contact lens wearers because of their need for bifocals or reading glasses. Other patients have tried contacts, but have given up because they had difficulty putting them in or taking them out, because they found them a bit irritating, or due to cost. Some patients like to wear glasses on an everyday basis, but would be interested in wearing contacts for special occasions but are hesitant because of the additional cost. There are solutions to all of these issues if a patient has a doctor who is willing to spend a little extra time working with them to address their individual needs and concerns.“

Dr. Gates is an optometrist who specializes in toric and multifocal contact lens fits. Toric contact lenses are made for people with astigmatism. Multifocal contact lenses provide vision correction for patients with presbyopia, who would normally wear bifocals, trifocals, progressive lenses, or reading glasses.

Monovision is another method of contact lens correction available for these patients. He will discuss the available options with his patients and make recommendations based upon their personal visual needs. He will work to find the right contact lenses for each patient, even if it takes a few extra attempts to find those perfect lenses.
Dr. Gates is also experienced in dealing with contact lens problems. If your contact lenses feel too dry or irritating, he has suggestions to help increase the comfort. If your eyes become irritated, inflamed, or infected, Dr. Gates has the training, experience, and expertise to take care of you to help restore your health. If your vision is not perfect, he knows how to make adjustments to the contact lens prescription to help improve your eyesight.
Carytown Optometry tries to provide an experience that will bring satisfied patients back year after year. If you are interested in trying contact lenses for the first time, or the first time in a long time we will take the time to teach you how to insert and remove the contact lenses from your eyes. If you need additional help, we invite you to come back in again until you are confident in your abilities.

Trying to insert and remove contact lenses can be extremely frustrating for first-time users. We are here to give guidance and support, along with helpful tips and instructions. We will also make sure to give you proper training on hygiene and contact lens care. If you have an interest in wearing contact lenses, but you have reservations for whatever reason, Dr. Gates and the staff at Carytown Optometry will take the time to answer all of your questions and address all of your concerns.
It is our goal to make you as happy as possible, and the way we do that is by getting you to see clearly and by putting forth the additional effort to make sure that you do. Please call us at 804-565-2020 or email us at benjamingatesod@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.
